Police arrested 19 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant between Oct. 5 and Sunday. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three were younger than 21.
Kona District police arrested 10 drivers, while South Hilo officers arrested five, Puna officers nabbed one driver and South Kohala officers cited three motorists.
So far this year, there have been 822 DUI arrests compared with 907 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9.4 percent.
There have been 1,178 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,230 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.2 percent.
So far this year, there were 16 traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared with 10 during the same period last year, an increase of 60 percent.
To date, five fatalities were related to drugs and four to a combination of drugs and alcohol.
